Exchange of knowledge: Allergen Management Technical Paper
Dutch Spices welcomes sharing its knowledge and experience via the media and other channels. Recently two Technical Papers from Dutch Spices were distributed, including via Food Ingredients First. One of these papers was titled 'Freedom of taste for food producers and consumers with a food allergy or intolerance'.
A major impact on consumers
More than 17 million people in Europe have been diagnosed as suffering from an (incurable) food allergy. The consequences of a food allergy are far-reaching: they influence and affect the quality of life not only of the sufferers but also of the sufferers’ families and social environment. Accurate and clear information on product packaging regarding the (possible) presence of allergens is essential for consumers with an allergy.
The consequences for food processing companies
The growing number of people with food allergies and intolerances also has consequences for the food processing sector. Food processers need to know more about allergens and cross-contamination in and between production processes and consumer products. They must both recognise the risks of cross-contamination and implement (more stringent than the legally mandatory) measures to prevent/reduce the risks of allergen (cross-)contamination.
The SimplyOK foundation has developed a certification scheme aimed at guaranteeing the allergen management systems of food companies. SimplyOK is a self-regulating initiative of a number of companies that realised there was a gap in the information provision for consumers with a food allergy or intolerance.

All Dutch Spices’ products are allergen safe: they do not contain any of the 14 substances designated as allergens by the EU and the absence of any cross-contamination is guaranteed by SimplyOK certification.
There are millions of people who have special dietary wishes or requirements.
